FAQ's - Lactation Consultations

Why book an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant)?

A IBCLC has undertaken specific educational pathways, continually professional development, examination certification, and usually reaccreditation to continue with the credentials of IBCLC.  By enlisting the support and guidance from a International Board Certified Lactation Consultant you should be confident you are receiving the very best in lactation management.   Many of Amy's previous clients have sought support initially through a hospital, midwife or maternal child health nurse; and find they still require support of a lactation consultant. This could be due to the complexities of their baby or parent, or the benefit are clear - they receive personalised, continuity of care provider, with dedicated time to work through this with them.

During a lactation consult, Amy will complete a holistic and thorough examination of you and your baby. This includes as standard, an oral examination of function with anatomy and structures; and how this functional assessment impacts on your breastfeeding or feeding. Amy takes the stance of assessing each dyad of parent and baby individually. Which means that the each oral restriction is assessed with the benefits and risks of 'releasing'; with the research and evidence presented to you, and the decision is yours, on which pathway you want. Referral will be made to your preferred provider, and Amy has a range of health professionals based on your need; this may include speech therapy, osteopathy, physiotherapy, paediatrician and general practitioner.
